Overview

Skin cancer is the most common of cancers, accounting for at least half of all cancers. Although Melanoma accounts for less than 5% of skin cancer cases, it is the leading cause of skin cancer deaths according to the American Cancer Society. In addition, Melanoma appears to be increasing in epidemic proportion, both in Southern California and throughout the United States. The number of new cases of Melanoma in 2008 is estimated to reach almost 63,000, of which more than 8,400 will result in death.

California now requires reporting of all melanomas. Because of this increase, as well as improved diagnostic techniques (i.e. sentinel node biopsy), therapeutic endeavors and the approval of alpha interferon and vaccine trials, we are once again focusing our Annual Cutaneous Malignancy course entirely on melanoma. This course is designed for dermatologists, pathologists, dermatopathologists, head and neck surgeons, primary care practitioners, and other health care professionals with an interest in, and basic understanding of skin cancer. A wide range of experts will participate as this most serious of skin cancers will require our utmost multi-disciplinary efforts to conquer.

Target Audience

The annual Melanoma course is designed for dermatologists, pathologists, dermatopathologists, head and neck surgeons, primary care practitioners, and other health care professionals with an interest in, and basic understanding of skin cancer.
