Training Opportunities for Internal Candidates in Nursing

Scripps nurses who have just graduated with a new nursing degree and are looking for specialized training should refer to new graduate training programs page.

The following programs are open to internal candidates only.

Scripps clinical educators and leaders have developed specialty training programs in intensive care unit (ICU), operating room (OR), emergency department (ED) and women’s services nursing . Nurses who complete this training will be fully prepared to work at any Scripps facility.

Spring 2014 application and program dates will be announced soon.

Registered Nurse – OR Training Program

Program duration: Six months
About the program: The Scripps Health Perioperative Education Program (PEP), which provides the essential foundation for a career in perioperative nursing, is based on the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Periop 101 Program.
Curriculum: The program uses a blended learning approach:

  • Didactic online modules
  • Assigned reading
  • Videos
  • Lectures
  • Observations
  • Labs
  • Clinical rotations in surgical services

Goal of program: The concepts of professionalism, evidence-based practice and critical thinking are incorporated throughout the program to prepare the transitioning RN to manage and deliver competent perioperative patient care.

Registered Nurse – ICU Training Program

Program duration: 12-16 weeks
About the program: The ICU training program helps new and experienced nurses become safe, competent intensive care clinicians.
Curriculum: The program fosters growth and learning through:

  • Classroom lecture and testing (reviews each physiologic system in depth including pulmonary, cardiovascular/hemodynamics, neuroscience, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, hematologic, and endocrine systems)
  • Hands-on lab and simulation exercises
  • Literature review and research assignments
  • Precepted and mentored clinical experiences

Goal of program: At the end of this program, the bedside nurse, as a member of the ICU clinical team, will be able to provide safe, evidence-based, and integrated care to our most critically ill and injured patients.

Registered Nurse – Emergency Services Training Program

Program duration: 12 weeks
About the program: The systemwide Emergency Nursing Transition Program facilitates the transition of an experienced RN with varied clinical background to an advanced beginner Emergency Nurse.
Curriculum: The program uses four teaching modalities:

  • An online educational component developed by The Emergency Nursing Association
  • Lectures by expert speakers who generalize the didactic to the bedside
  • Hands-on skills and simulation learning
  • Clinical orientation with trained preceptors in the emergency departments across the system.

Goal of program: As a result of this program, nurses develop knowledge and skills to care for the challenging and varied population of patients who seek care in the Emergency Department setting.

Women’s Services Training Program

Program duration:

  • 6 months (basic maternal child health training)
  • 6 to 8 weeks (additional postpartum nursing for nurses working in this area)
  • 6 months (additional labor and delivery training for nurses working in this area)

About the program: The Scripps Health Perinatal Orientation and Education Program (POEP) offers a learning environment and essential foundation for a rewarding and successful career in maternal-child health nursing. The first six months prepares nurses for the basics of maternal-child health nursing. The program is based on the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) Perinatal Orientation and Education Program (POEP) and Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Periop 101 Program for Obstetrics.

Curriculum: The program uses a blended learning approach:

  • Observations
  • Labs
  • Clinical rotations in labor and delivery and postpartum nursing

Goal of program: The concepts of professionalism, evidence-based practice and critical thinking are incorporated throughout the program to prepare the transitioning RN to manage and deliver competent maternal child patient care.
