A Tribute Gift is More Than Just a Kind Gesture

Letter from a Scripps Patient

During my recent recovery from major surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, I received many cards, gifts, flowers and other very touching well wishes from friends, family and co-workers.

I must tell you that none touched me more than several beautiful cards I received from Scripps, informing me that a friend or co-worker had made a donation in my honor to the Radiology Department at Scripps La Jolla. As a single working mom, I deeply appreciated that my loved ones would spend their hard-earned cash on such a thoughtful gift – not to purchase flowers that would please me for a few weeks until they faded, but to help purchase new radiology equipment, which had been absolutely critical to my own diagnosis, treatment and post-operative care.

To know that, because of my ordeal and the gratitude my loved ones felt for my recovery, some other parent might one day in the future be returned to the warm embrace of her family, as I have been, was such a lovely way to honor me. These tribute gifts moved me deeply. It will always be my great honor to know that my friends – some as far away as Washington, D.C. – had thoughtfully helped ensure that this life-saving equipment would be available to others who face what I had faced, and would also be able to recover as I have.

I want to thank Scripps for making this opportunity – more than a gesture, but a real act of love – available to patients and to those who care about them.

Sincerely,
J. L.
