Liver and Kidney Disease Support Group

This unique educational series is designed for people with liver and kidney disease. Open to the community, it features a monthly guest speaker and a variety of health topics.

The lecture is followed by individual support groups for liver and kidney disease patients and their families. The goal is to help participants better manage their health, cope with the stresses associated with the transplant process and provide updates on treatment advances.

Dr. Heather Patton, from Kaiser and board-certified in transplant hepatology, is one. Dr. Patton will discuss her approach to the diagnosis and management of liver disease. Many of you may already feel she’s your kind of doctor by her statement about patient and caregiver education.

The transplant surgeon who listens to his patients

Dr. Randy Schaffer is known and respected for his skills as a transplant surgeon. But his patients value him just as much for his commitment to listening to them and answering the many questions that come with a transplant evaluation. Dr. Schaffer has been one of our transplant surgeons since 2003. He also heads the living donor part of our program and chairs the Ethics Committee for Scripps Green Hospital. In his presentation, he will address liver allocation, discuss the proposed changes for transplant and answer questions.

Often patients with chronic conditions, along with their family and friends, assume that stress and anxiety are part of the condition. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Debra Lobatz, a licensed marriage and family counselor, returns to our support group with practical, doable approaches and suggestions to help better manage stress and anxiety, and change the quality of life for the better. She invites your questions and concerns.

Dr. Sondoozi is a psychologist who works through Scripps Mercy’s Employee Assistance Program.
