Alcohol and Drug Treatment - Services

At the Scripps drug and alcohol treatment program (formerly known as the McDonald Center), our medically supervised programs are guided by skilled professionals who understand the recovery process from detox to discharge, continuing through aftercare. Every treatment plan begins with a free initial assessment to design the most appropriate type of care.

Comprehensive drug and alcohol treatment programs

Scripps offers the following drug and alcohol treatment programs. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 1-800-382-4357.

Assessments

Our chemical dependency treatment program offers free assessments to help evaluate which level of care may be most appropriate for every adult and adolescent patient. It involves a session with a specially trained staff member who will address biopsychosocial history and treatment needs.

Twenty-eight-day residential program

Available to adults who are medically stable and/or who have completed a detoxification program—at the Scripps drug and alcohol treatment center or elsewhere—our 28-day residential program provides maximum support, structure, safety and help in an inpatient residential setting. The program includes:
  • A 12-step abstinence-based model
  • Twenty-eight days in a structured, drug-free environment
  • Instruction in the tools and skills required to develop a lifestyle of recovery
  • Group sessions that focus on the application of recovery tools in daily life
  • Unique “sober field trips” to help integrate new sobriety skills into real-world settings
  • Intensive four-day family program designed to bring families back together
  • Aftercare for up to one year

Family program

One of the most innovative components of our basic treatment is our four-day family program. Developed by Claudia Black, Ph.D., an internationally recognized expert in the addiction treatment field, the program involves family members and close friends in the process of recovery and gives families the tools to rebuild a healthy family.

Medical detoxification and stabilization

The Medical Detox Program is a medically supervised detoxification in an inpatient setting, which facilitates the safe withdrawal from alcohol and/or drugs.

The Stabilization Program is designed for patients who have completed detoxification but still require medical supervision.

Individuals receive comprehensive substance abuse assessment and psychosocial evaluation, along with:

  • Introduction to the principles of abstinence based on 12-step recovery programs
  • Group sessions that focus on the application of recovery tools in daily life
  • Development of ongoing care and relapse prevention skills
  • Education on the disease model of addiction for patients and their families
  • Introduction to ongoing recovery support services available for patients and their families

Evening outpatient program

Based on the same principles as our more intensive 28-day residential recovery program, the evening outpatient program is an alternative for people who are able to maintain their day-to-day responsibilities while participating in a treatment program. The outpatient program offers:
  • A 12-step abstinence-based model
  • Twenty evening sessions held over a seven-week period
  • Instruction in the tools and skills required to develop a lifestyle of recovery
  • Group sessions that focus on the application of recovery tools in daily life
  • Family sessions designed to educate and support the family
  • Aftercare provided for up to one year
Our staff can help you determine whether the evening outpatient program is appropriate for you. Factors to consider include:
  • The severity of your addiction
  • Your ability to regularly attend the program
  • Your ability to follow the guidelines of the program in daily life

Aftercare program

The opportunity to be with others who understand the disease of addiction and the recovery process is one of the most valued elements in a treatment program. The Scripps aftercare program is designed to support and reinforce the recovery principles and lifestyle changes that begin in a primary treatment program, and addresses circumstances and issues that can jeopardize successful ongoing recovery. Aftercare groups are led by specially trained facilitators in recovery. We recommend a minimum of three months of aftercare in order to maintain results achieved in a primary treatment program. Our programs include a full year of aftercare services, including:
  • A 12-step abstinence-based model
  • Identification of relapse warning signs and how to address them
  • Instruction in stress management and coping skills to prevent relapse
  • Application of effective communication skills and other recovery tools in daily life

Addiction education and community outreach

A counselor and interventionist from the Scripps drug and alcohol treatment program is available to provide educational opportunities for community and school outreach. If you would like to have someone speak to your organization or group about adult and adolescent drug and alcohol addiction, please call 1-800-382-4357.
