The physicians of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology were instrumental in starting a transplantation program at Scripps Clinic, now known as Scripps Center for Organ and Cell Transplantation. Additionally, the Liver Disease Center was created in 1990 to provide specialized care for patients living with liver failure and conditions such as Hepatitis B or C. Philanthropic support provides ongoing liver disease research at the Liver Disease Center, helping the division to become internationally recognized for their efforts.
