Scripps Clinic Division of Orthopedic Surgery
In keeping with the mission of Scripps Clinic, members of the Division of Orthopedic Surgery are dedicated to providing excellent patient care while maintaining a strong commitment to medical education and both clinical and laboratory research.
Members of the division serve as faculty for post-residency fellowship programs in sports medicine and joint replacement surgery, educating seven fellows in these areas each year. After completing their orthopedic surgery residency program, these individuals spend an additional year of training focusing on the latest surgical techniques under our surgeons. Orthopedic surgery residents from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) program
and two podiatry residents from the Scripps Mercy Hospital program also train under our surgeons annually.
Our physicians also participate as clinical faculty for the medical students and the orthopedic surgery residency program at UCSD, as well as for physician continuing education courses across the country and around the world. Our team members have been granted awards for excellence in teaching year after year, including the following from UCSD:
- The Francis West Award
- The Wayne Akeson Award
- The Vernon Nickel Award
Because education and research go hand in hand, our division members also help teach students and other medical professionals about the innovative orthopedic research taking place at the Shiley Center for Orthopaedic Research and Education (SCORE). As a premier learning center, SCORE attracts audiences from around the world with continuing medical educational opportunities such as live surgery video broadcasts. Visiting surgeons get hands-on exposure to specialized instruments, implants, and surgical techniques, while international students from a variety of disciplines such as health, engineering and research can receive training in both the biomechanical laboratory and the operating room.
