If you need a specialist
Should a time arise when you require the care of a specialist, a referral to one may be made. If your insurance is an HMO (health maintenance organization), your physician is required to submit a request for you to see a specialist.
Scripps Coastal Medical Center contracts with hundreds of specialists. Referrals may take 7 to 10 working days (depending on your health insurance) from the time you discuss the referral with your doctor.
If your referral is approved, you will receive a written authorization by mail. If your referral is not approved, your physician will be happy to discuss alternatives with you as needed.
