Scripps Awards Design and Construction Contracts for La Jolla and Rancho Bernardo

Scripps Health has awarded architectural and construction contracts for the design and development of the Scripps cardiovascular institute on the campus of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and the tenant improvement contract for the new Scripps Clinic in Rancho Bernardo.

Scripps has awarded the Los Angeles office of HOK a $26 million contract to design the seven-story, 313,000-square-foot cardiovascular institute – which will combine the cardiovascular programs of Scripps La Jolla and Scripps Clinic/Scripps Green Hospital. The building will include 108 medical/surgical beds, 60 intensive care unit beds, 10 interventional/operating rooms, a new central energy plant, a sterile processing department and space for a future expansion of the emergency department.

In awarding the contract, Scripps chose HOK based upon its experience and expertise in health care planning and design, ability to manage the project, experience working in California and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development.
When complete, the Scripps cardiovascular institute will be a center for the most advanced diagnostic and treatment options for patients with cardiovascular diseases, as well as serve as a center for medical research, clinical trials and graduate medical education. Scripps is the largest provider of cardiovascular services in the San Diego region and the combined programs of Scripps La Jolla and Scripps Clinic/Scripps Green Hospital would be one of the largest on the West Coast.Construction is expected to begin by 2012 and completed by 2015.

Scripps also selected Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. of Pasadena, Calif., as the construction manager for the Scripps cardiovascular institute and the seismic retrofitting work at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla — $10 million for Scripps cardiovascular institute and $7 million for the seismic retrofitting. Scripps must complete the retrofitting work by 2013 to comply with state law mandating all hospitals meet seismic safety standards.

In addition to the work at Scripps La Jolla, Scripps Health also awarded Reno Contracting Inc. of San Diego a $20 million contract for construction of tenant improvements for the new 146,000-square-foot Scripps Clinic site in Rancho Bernardo. The work includes building a new ambulatory surgery center, fully digital radiology department, urgent care and a women’s imaging center. The center is currently under construction and is slated to open in October 2008.

The new six-story clinic will replace the current Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo across the street at 15025 Innovation Drive. Services will be expanded and new technology added, thanks to an additional 60,000 square feet that will be available at the replacement facility. More than 80 physicians and 250 employees representing 25 specialties will practice at the new Rancho Bernardo facility.
