Scripps Coastal and Scripps Clinic Rank Highest in the Region for Delivering Quality Patient Care

San Diego – Scripps Coastal Medical Center and Scripps Clinic physicians received the highest marks from San Diego patients, according to a report from the California Cooperative Healthcare Reporting Initiative (CCHRI). The medical groups ranked No. 1 and 2 in the San Diego region for overall rating of all health care, including rating of primary care physicians, and doctor-patient interactions.

The scores are based on results of the annual Patient Assessment Survey (PAS), which asks people about the care and service they received from their health care provider.

“This ranking from our patients demonstrates a vote of confidence in our efforts to provide the highest quality of care and service to the San Diego community,” said Kevin Hirsch, MD, president of Scripps Coastal Medical Group. “We continue to keep our patients’ best interest top-of-mind, which is evident by our efforts to add more convenient locations to the Scripps Health family.”

The CCHRI is a statewide collaborative of health plans, provider organizations, and purchasers, which conducts an annual survey to assess commercial HMO (health maintenance organization) and POS (point of service) patient experiences with the care delivered by their medical groups. The results, based on 2009 data, are used by physician groups for quality improvement, by consumers for physician selection and by health plans for determining quality-based payments.

The key performance domains assessed in the PAS include:

  • Overall ratings of all health care
  • Rating of primary care physician
  • Rating of specialist and access to care
  • Physician communication (doctor-patient interactions)
  • Patient access to care (primary and specialty, non-urgent and urgent)
  • Coordination of care
  • Office staff
  • Health promotion

“Year after year, our patients trust us with their health care. We honor that trust by being committed to high quality all the time,” said Robert Sarnoff, M.D., president of Scripps Clinic Medical Group. “This ranking underscores our promise to provide quality patient care that is safe and well coordinated to every Scripps Clinic patient.”

Scripps Coastal Medical Center has a long-standing reputation for excellence in family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics, offering more than 100 physicians in offices from Oceanside to Eastlake. In September, Scripps Coastal Medical Center added a 10th location in Del Mar; physicians from Del Mar Medical Clinic now have access to the entire Scripps Health network.
