‘In Concert for Cancer’ Still Set for March 11 Aboard USS Midway Museum

SAN DIEGO – A jazz concert to benefit research and patient services at Scripps Cancer Center is still set for Friday, March 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. aboard the USS Midway Museum, despite Monday’s announced cancellation of the Oasis Contemporary Jazz Awards that was planned for this weekend.
The inaugural “In Concert for Cancer” fundraising concert is an independently produced event and will feature a lineup of six world-renowned jazz recording artists, who will perform under the stars on the aircraft carrier museum’s flight deck. Headlining artists include guitarist Richard Smith, keyboardist Gregg Karukas, and fellow saxophonists Jeff Kashiwa and Steve Cole. Special guest artists for the evening include saxophonist and vocalist Mindi Abair and saxophonist Kim Waters. Kashiwa, Cole and Waters will also perform as the traveling trio known as the “Sax Pack.”
“In Concert for Cancer is standing strong and we’re excited to welcome the San Diego community to an amazing night of music to benefit a tremendously worthwhile cause,” said Michele Abrams, founder of Cjazz, the event’s producer. “We’ve sold more than 550 tickets to In Concert for Cancer, which reflects strong community support for our artists and for Scripps Cancer Center.”
Abrams says the approximately 150 people who bought tickets for “In Concert for Cancer” as part of their Oasis VIP package will have tickets waiting for them at the registration table at the USS Midway Friday night. Cjazz is also offering comp tickets to “In Concert for Cancer” to the 54 people who each won a pair of tickets on KIFM radio to the now-cancelled Oasis awards program, which had been planned for Saturday night.
