Scripps Cardiologist Nominated for 50 Most Influential Physician Executives List

Annual voting by Modern Healthcare readers ends Feb. 14

A new trade agreement hammered out between the United States and China could boost the competitive positions of San Diego area medical technology companies.

Scripps Health Chief Academic Officer Eric Topol, MD, is among 100 leading physicians across the country nominated for Modern Healthcare magazine’s annual list of the “50 Most Influential Physician Executive Leaders.”

Dr. Topol, a cardiologist who directs the Scripps Translational Science Institute (STSI), is the only nominee from San Diego County, and he is among seven Californians on the ballot.

Dr. Topol first appeared on the Modern Healthcare list in 2012 when he was ranked No. 1 following the publication of his seminal book “The Creative Destruction of Medicine: How the Digital Revolution Will Create Better Health Care.” Last year, he landed at No. 8 on the list.

This year’s final 100 nominees came from more than 2,500 names submitted by readers between Nov. 4 and Dec. 20. The final ballot was compiled from the physicians who received the most nominations.

An internationally renowned cardiologist, geneticist and researcher, Dr. Topol has led the push to modernize medicine through the adoption of genetic sequencing and wireless technology.

As director of STSI, Dr. Topol guides an innovative, National Institutes of Health-supported collaborative research program between Scripps Health and The Scripps Research Institute in partnership with the San Diego Supercomputer Center.
