Scripps Cardiologist Tops List of Life Science Influencers on Twitter

Eric Topol's No. 1 ranking boosted by more than 74,000 followers

A new trade agreement hammered out between the United States and China could boost the competitive positions of San Diego area medical technology companies.

Scripps Clinic cardiologist and researcher Eric Topol, MD, is the most influential person on Twitter in the life sciences field, according to a new ranking of the top 100 influencers in the space by Avacta Life Sciences.

The British biotechnology company said people on the list are good sources of “the latest news and views on life science, including molecular biology, genomics, genetics and protein engineering.” The company said the rankings were based on three factors: the number of Twitter followers; the number of mentions on Twitter; and the number of retweets.

Dr. Topol, who also directs the Scripps Translational Science Institute, had 74,216 followers, 6,240 mentions and 4,899 retweets at the time the list was compiled, and he was the only person on the list to receive a 100 influence score.

Others appearing on the list included San Diego biologist J. Craig Venter, University of California Davis evolutionary biology professor Jonathan Eisen and Medpage Today co-founder Ivan Oransky.
