Quality Reports

These reports list Scripps Health’s performance on a number of nationally-recognized quality indicators and practices. This information is the most current available for Scripps Health, though the lengthy process of rating performance criteria means it may be rating our performance of several months ago.

These indicators are also reported by a number of independent organizations (see Quality Resources). These “outside” reports rate performance at Scripps Health but are less current.

In addition to these primary reports, we also internally track hundreds of other measures. We’re always working to optimize patient safety, identify and share best care practices, and target areas for improvement.

Hospital quality reports are a valuable tool in helping consumers choose appropriate health care providers. However, the reports are only one of several important factors to consider when making health care decisions.

What are quality measures?

Quality measures are percentages or rates that show how often a health care provider gives “recommended care,” which is defined as the treatment known to give the best results for most patients with a particular condition.

Though limited in scope, a review of standard quality measures is one way to illustrate how well a hospital cares for its patients.

How is the data collected?

Quality measure data is primarily based on documentation of the care provided, and not on direct assessments of health care delivery. Quality measure data is collected from medical information in patient records. This information is used to determine whether the hospital provided the recommended care to patients. The hospital’s compliance with standards of recommended care is then converted into a rate or percentage.
