Our commitment to health care quality

Here at Scripps, we are guided by our mission, vision and core values:

  • Our mission is to provide superior health services in a caring environment and to make a positive, measurable difference in the health of individuals in the communities we serve.
  • Our vision is to be the leading health care delivery system in the greater San Diego community, as evidenced by the highest clinical quality, patient safety, and patient, physician and employee satisfaction.
  • Our values are to provide the highest quality of service, demonstrate complete respect for the rights of every individual, and care for our patients every day in a responsible and efficient manner.

And that includes our commitment to continuously improving the quality of health care we provide to you, our patients and our community. From patient satisfaction scores and quality ratings to awards and accolades, the results speak for themselves. Data shows that, on average, we have better patient satisfaction scores, higher survival rates and fewer medical errors than many health care systems in the nation.

Patient experience and safety

Our doctors and staff are fully committed to excellent care and an exceptional patient experience. We think of “patient experience” as every interaction you have with Scripps. We want every patient and family member to feel supported as a member of the “Scripps family,” and we strive to give you the kind of service and compassionate care we would want to receive ourselves. We follow best practices in clinical protocols and processes, which are evidenced-based and confirmed to improve safety, outcomes and the patient experience.

In collaboration with the California Hospital Association, the Hospital Quality Institute produces a dashboard of hospital safety scores that can be viewed by the public. The goal of these reports is transparency and quality improvement. Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Encinitas received an overall rating of five out of five stars. Scripps has received many awards demonstrating that our care is among the best in the nation. Learn more about our accolades and awards

Physician Quality

The Integrated Healthcare Association ranked Scripps Clinic Medical Group and Scripps Coastal Medical Center among the top 10% of California provider organizations for patient experience. Scripps Coastal Medical Center has also received a regional award for quality improvement for achieving top marks in quality of care, patient satisfaction and cost management.

Trauma Center

Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla are designated as Level 1 adult trauma centers, the highest designation awarded by the American College of Surgeons to indicate the highest range of injury care available to patients in San Diego County.

Heart Care

The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA) awarded all five Scripps hospitals with the Stroke Gold Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes hospitals that deliver high-quality, life-saving stroke care. The Joint Commission also certified our four Scripps emergency rooms as Primary Stroke Centers. This means our hospitals have the critical elements in place to achieve long-term success after stroke.

Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla ranked among the top 50 cardiovascular hospitals by Fortune magazine and Premier’s PINC AI, a health care improvement and technology company. Those in the top 50 operated at lower cost and had better outcomes, had significantly higher inpatient survival rates, fewer patients with complications, lower readmission rates and spent up to $5,076 less in total costs per patient case. If all hospitals operated at the level of the top 50, there would be 7,600 fewer deaths due to heart disease, 6,700 fewer patients with complications and more than $1 billion saved each year, according to the analysis.
