Biography

Shazia Jamil, MD, is a specialist in pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine and sleep medicine. She is the Head of Academic Affairs at the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine of Scripps Clinic. She was trained at UCSD under Physician-Scientist pathway. During her fellowship, she was selected to attend Harvard School of Public Health as a post-doctoral fellow to extend her education and training in statistics, epidemiology and clinical research and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship in molecular and cell biology from UCSD.

Dr. Jamil staunchly believes in application of basic science and physiological knowledge to each clinical setting. She is interested in early diagnosis and management of life-threatening illnesses with special interests in intensive care management of acute liver failure, decompensated liver disease, transplant/immunocompromised patients, pulmonary embolism and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Her interest in liver diseases stems from her training by world-renowned Hepatologist Dr. Telfer Reynolds at USC who founded one of the first Liver Clinics in the US. In the outpatient arena, she is the founding Director of Circadian Rhythm Disorders and Chronotherapy Program for accurate evaluation and management of these relatively unrecognized disorders. This stems from her training with Dr. Sonia Ancoli-Israel at UCSD and Dr. Daniel Kripke, both world-renowned in their groundbreaking work in Circadian Biology.

Dr. Jamil is a nationally recognized clinical educator, who is passionate about advancing continuing medical education. She serves as conference chair and planner of several continuing medical education (CME) conferences at city, state and national levels, aimed at bridging the knowledge gap between community and academic clinicians in the hope of providing evidence-based medical care to patients in all settings. She co-founded San Diego Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Case conference and Clinical Updates, a regularly scheduled free CME conference. She is the co-editor of a Critical Care Medicine Review book from American Thoracic Society and serves on the editorial board of the journal ATS Scholar. She co-founded and Chairs the Rapid Response Document series that is regularly published in American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, which addresses emerging lung health issues and provide rapid, accurate state-of-the art evidence-based educational information that can be readily used by healthcare professionals and patients. Her group published one of the first public health articles in the US in February 2020, on the newly identified coronarvirus. She serves as Chair of Education Committee of the California Thoracic Society and served as Chair of Sleep Core Curriculum at the Education Committee of the American Thoracic Society.

She is a clinical professor of medicine at Scripps Clinic where she is involved in resident and fellow teaching and also educates medical students as a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

Dr. Jamil has been named as one of “America’s Top Physicians” from the Consumer’s Research Council of America multiple times since 2004. She has been honored with Outstanding Teaching Awards from USC School of Medicine and Scripps Clinic, American Lung Association Research Awards, Young Investigator Award, University of California Medical Education and Research Foundation Award and Outstanding Clinician Award from California Thoracic Society. She is also the recipient of Outstanding Clinician Award from American Thoracic Society in 2022 and is only the fourth woman and the first Asian American woman to receive this most prestigious award since its inception in 2003.

She is involved in her community as a teacher and volunteer and deeply cares about environmental issues. She has served as a science and math coach to local school children, mentor for undergraduate college students and taught Basic Life Support at schools. Her love of nature exploration has taken her around the world, including exploring eight of the world’s rainforests. She enjoys hiking, playing tennis, cooking, gardening and growing orchids.
