Dr. Teirstein completed medical school at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed a fellowship in cardiology at Stanford University and subsequently spent a year as a fellow in complex angioplasty with Dr. Geoffrey Hartzler at the Mid-America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Missouri. Following this he completed a fellowship in stents, atherectomy and lasers at the National Institutes of Health. Subsequently he founded the interventional cardiology program at Scripps Clinic, where he currently serves as chief of cardiology and director of interventional cardiology.

With a primary focus on complex angioplasty and new technology development, Dr. Teirstein has played an active role in the initial development and clinical investigation of coronary stent procedures, Rotablator atherectomy, transluminal extraction atherectomy, coronary angioscopy and the utilization of cardiopulmonary support. Dr. Teirstein pioneered the first effective treatment for restenosis (low dose radiation therapy) and was one of the early investigators of medicated stents.

The author of numerous publications, Dr. Teirstein has lectured throughout the world on state-of-the-art interventional cardiology techniques. He is an internationally recognized leader in cardiology and has received awards for both research and clinical excellence. Dr. Teirstein currently performs in excess of 1000 stent procedures per year and maintains an active clinical research unit at Scripps Clinic.
