About

Shiley Center for Orthopaedic Research and Education

Established in 1983 by Clifford Colwell, MD, Shiley Center for Orthopaedic Research and Education (SCORE) at Scripps Clinic in San Diego, Calif. is committed to improving patient care and quality of life. Through scientific investigation and scholarship, SCORE has advanced the field of orthopedics and developed innovative programs to share best practices.

Driven and designed to make a difference

SCORE works to turn scientific discoveries into practical applications. Our infrastructure makes that possible. Specially designed laboratories are used to carry-out biomechanical and biological research. Close partnerships with physicians and nurses from Scripps Clinic’s and Scripps Green Hospital enable us to conduct clinical research. Statisticians from the at SCORE track results following surgery to identify best practices and new opportunities for investigation. These capabilities and collaborations allow SCORE to conduct leading-edge translational research, moving findings from our laboratory benches to patients’ bedsides.

Expanding horizons through education

SCORE strives to share knowledge with fellow researchers, clinicians and students. The center offers live surgery viewing, classroom instruction and laboratory practicum experience. While our programs attract audiences from around the world, our commitment to education begins in our own community. As part of an effort to stoke interest in science and provide learning opportunities for teenagers who want to become the next generation of orthopedic care givers and researchers, SCORE offers specialized programs for young students in the greater San Diego area.
