Qualification Criteria

In order to receive home health care, patients must typically:

  • Require skilled intermittent care (as opposed to continuous or custodial care)
  • Have a physician to order home care, and follow up throughout the home care episode
  • Be homebound (with a few exceptions), meaning that it takes a considerable and taxing effort for the patient to leave home. “Home” is wherever the patient is staying: a friend or relative’s house, an assisted living facility, a board and care, a hotel, etc. (It cannot be a skilled nursing facility, which is a duplication of services.)
