Scripps Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery Program

Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical approach. Similar to conventional laparoscopic procedures, small incisions are made to create ports near the operating field. During robot-assisted surgeries, the surgeon sits at a console in the operating room and remotely manipulates surgical instruments attached to robotic arms. A powerful camera provides magnified images of the structure being operated on and the surrounding nerves and tissues.

From the surgeon’s perspective, the robotic surgical system offers several advantages, including:
- Enhanced dexterity, precision and control through instruments that provide a much greater range of motion than the human hand and wrist
- Three-dimensional, high-definition images that provide clear details of the surgical area
- The ability to perform more complex surgical procedures than can be accomplished with conventional laparoscopic surgery
Potential Patient Benefits
When compared to traditional open surgeries—which require long incisions and invasive tissue disruption—minimally invasive robotic procedures may have several advantages, including:
- Faster recovery
- Less blood loss
- Less scarring
- Quicker return to normal activities
- Reduced pain
- Shorter hospital stays
The surgeons who participate in Scripps Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery Program have completed specialized training in robot-assisted surgical procedures. First used by urologic surgeons for prostate removal, specialists in cardiothoracic surgery, gynecologic surgery and general surgery are now using the robot, offering surgical treatment options for a wide-range of conditions—from heart valve repairs to hysterectomies.
