James E. LaBelle, MD

Named chief medical officer (CMO) in 2013, Dr. Jim LaBelle plays a critical role in expanding and maintaining partnerships built with physicians over the last decade. Under his direction, Scripps is engaging physicians in the coordination and management of inpatient and outpatient clinical care, more closely linking Scripps hospitals with a growing ambulatory care network. With a focus on improving patient care quality and safety while reducing unneeded variation and cost, Dr. LaBelle is also responsible for Scripps’ hospitalist and intensivist programs and medical directorships.
Dr. LaBelle has practiced emergency medicine for more than 25 years. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Association for Physician Leadership. Prior to his appointment as CMO, he was corporate vice president of quality, physician co-management and medical management. Dr. LaBelle also served as medical director of emergency services at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, where he served two terms as chief of staff and was medical director of clinical quality (2005). He recently completed a term as board member for The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI).
Dr. LaBelle earned his medical degree at the University of Washington and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Diego. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and a health care executive Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Irvine.
