What are the requirements for volunteering?

People of all backgrounds and abilities who want to help others can become volunteers. Adults, college students, and high school students (minimum age 15) are eligible. Previous experience is not required, as we provide training for all positions.

We are looking for caring, dependable people willing to make a long term commitment of six months and at least 100 hours. After an initial interview, orientation and health requirements, volunteers are matched to an area of service.

What positions are offered?

We have many different opportunities to make a difference in various areas of the hospital and clinics, including:

  • Waiting rooms for families and visitors
  • Gift shops
  • Messengers
  • Clinical departments
  • Patient escort
  • Service ambassadors
  • Reception
  • Therapy dog program
  • Nursing and surgical units
  • Volunteer services support
  • Sewing and craft group

Our volunteer office staff will work closely with you to help determine the best placement. Our goal is to match your interests, skills and availability with the needs of our organization.

Volunteers enjoy an enriching experience as part of our caring Scripps family. Whether your interest is giving back to the community, exploring a career in health care, or looking for a rewarding way to spend your free time, we strive to make your volunteer experience personally rewarding.

Special volunteer programs

Scripps offers some special volunteer opportunities in addition to patient care and other support areas throughout the hospital. Be sure to ask for more details during your interview.

Calling all dog lovers

Scripps also offers a very special program led by our four-legged therapists — our canine therapy program. Your canine can contribute to a patient’s quality of life by providing a sense of peace and comfort. Our pet therapy program maintains specific requirements and criteria for your canine, including:

  • Obedience training
  • Must be at least one year old
  • Canine Good Citizen certification
  • Current inoculations

Moms, are you ready to try something new?

Scripps has a program for moms interested in volunteering. Whether you are a stay at home mom or dealing with a newly-emptied nest, we offer volunteer opportunities with flexible hours — day, evening and weekend shifts are available.

How do I get started?

Simply email our volunteer services office closest to you and ask for information on next steps. Attending an open house is also a great way for you to see if volunteering at Scripps is right for you.

High school volunteer applicants 15 to 17 years old require parental consent.

What do I get out of volunteering?

An opportunity to:

  • Learn new skills
  • Make new friends
  • Develop new interests
  • Grow in understanding of health care in our community
  • Enjoy the satisfaction that comes from helping others
