What Is Special Enrollment?

Even though the 2018 open enrollment period for health insurance has ended, you can still enroll or change your health plan if you have a life event that qualifies you for special enrollment during the year, such as being newly married.

Change in Household Size

You may qualify for Special Enrollment if you or anyone in your household:

  • Recently married
  • Had a baby, adopted a child, or placed a child for foster care
  • Gained or became a dependent due to child support or other court order

Note: If you gained or became a dependent due to marriage, then one spouse

must have had qualifying health coverage for one or more days in the

60 days prior to the marriage. This doesn’t apply if the spouse was living in a

foreign country or a U.S. territory for one or more days in the 60 days prior to

the marriage, or is a member of a federally recognized tribe or a shareholder in

an Alaska Native Corporation.

How to Enroll After a Qualifying Life Event

You have 60 days from the date of your qualifying event to choose new health coverage. You must provide proof of your qualifying life event within this time or you will have to wait until the next open enrollment period (or until you experience another qualifying life event).
