The Trauma Luau was a grassroots effort that began in 1999 by 4 West nurses at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla to raise money for nursing certifications. This year the Trauma Luau is proudly celebrating its 19th anniversary!

San Diego, being a popular vacation experience destination, with its recreational beach activities, various lodging options and easily accessible e-transportation methods is a magnet for adventurers. Its laid-back neighborhoods are a welcome playground to both residents and visitors alike.
These adventurers may find themselves not only falling for the sun-soaked beaches, but often take a fall of another nature. Falls are also frequently unexplained and unexpected. When alcohol and/or cannabis are involved it can exacerbate the resultant trauma.
Lava flow leads us then to our exploration of injury from burns. The impact of all of this trauma care may result in burnout for those who care for these patients. How do we then resurface from all of the rubble? Our rad social work team provides a lifeline with debriefing and support. We are also fortunate in San Diego to have top notch prehospital teams!
Please come and join us at this 19th Trauma Luau as we SURF THE SIDEWALK TO SAFETY!
After attending this live activity, participants should be able to:
• Describe commonly found fall-related injuries.
• Discuss scooter dangers and resultant trauma injuries.
• Discuss the effects of cannabis on our trauma patients.
• Examine neurological trauma.
• Discuss issues related to alcohol involvement in trauma injuries.
• Describe burn injury, impact and treatment.
• Discuss the importance of self-care of health care providers through debriefing and preventing burnout.
• Discuss the role of prehospital care in street and beach trauma.
