Improve Practice Efficiencies and Patient/Provider Joy by Asking, “What Matters to You?”

About This Activity

Program Overview

The Health Outcomes Survey (HOS) assesses the ability of a Medicare Advantage (MA) organization to maintain or improve the physical and mental health of its members over time. All managed care organizations with Medicare contracts must participate. A random sample of health plan members is selected from eligible MA contracts to participate in the HOS program each year. The surveys are administered between April and July.

HOS (and CAHPS) ratings account for more than a quarter of overall CMS Star quality ratings. Because physicians drive performance on HOS quality measures, BSC uses a variety of methods to support practice improvement in key HOS measurement areas. Collaboration with Provider Education on HOS-related CME webinars is one such method. The 2021 webinar(s) is designed to build on the success of these previous training events.

Educational Objectives

After completing this internet enduring material, participants should be able to:

  • State the relationship between HOS scores and improved patient communication.
  • Describe the What Matters to You (WMTY) patient engagement approach.
  • List two examples of how asking, listening, and doing “what mattered” improved patient experience, promoted care efficiency, and brought joy to work.
  • Explain the alignment between WMTY and the spirit and skills of motivational interviewing.
  • List two time saving tips for integrating WMTY into busy clinical practice settings.
