Featuring Scripps Physician Guest Speakers Each Month
This unique educational series is designed for people with liver and kidney disease. Open to the community, it features a monthly guest speaker and a variety of health topics.
The lecture is followed by individual support groups for liver and kidney disease patients and their families. The goal is to help participants better manage their health, cope with the stresses associated with the transplant process and provide updates on treatment advances.

Speaker: Bijan Roshan, MD
Dr. Roshan’s presentation will be of special interest not only to kidney patients, but also to liver patients, many of whom have renal challenges — an area of Dr. Roshan’s expertise for the past 27 years. Throughout his career, Dr. Roshan has been active in all areas of nephrology — clinical, teaching and clinical research. He has also been a passionate advocate for his patients, dedicated to providing customized treatment plans to fit individual needs and lifestyles. Dr. Catherine Frenette will update you on what’s happening with liver disease management. She’ll review the latest trends, share what’s important treatment-wise for
those with chronic liver disease or post-transplant concerns, and answer questions in her uniquely warm and caring style. As well as being Scripps Medical Director of Liver Transplantation, Dr. Frenette is one of our most popular physicians. As soon as you hear and meet her, you’ll know why.

Speaker: Lisa Nyberg, MD
Dr. Lisa Nyberg, one of San Diego’s most respected liver specialists, will discuss some current issues affecting patients with liver disease. Formerly, Dr. Nyberg was associated with Scripps Green Hospital in years past and for many years she has been with Kaiser. She was instrumental in helping to create the close working relationship that led to the development of the Kaiser/Scripps transplant program. Dr. Nyberg has a very loyal patient base. Her patients trust her implicitly because of her honesty, respect, clinical expertise, and advocacy.

Speaker: Christopher Marsh, MD
Dr. Christopher Marsh is the chief of the Scripps Organ Transplantation Service and surgical program director of the Scripps Center for Organ Transplantation, as well as the vice president for surgical services for the Scripps Clinic medical group. He is also the past chief of staff for Scripps Green Hospital.
There’s no one better to present both a retrospective and a future perspective of Scripps transplant program than Dr. Marsh, the physician responsible for reinvigorating the program and developing a transplant team regionally recognized as the highest quality. When Dr. Marsh came to Scripps in 2002, it was a good program. Under his tutelage, it has become a great program. Join our group for an evening of transplant trends over the years and what you can expect to see in the near future.

Speaker: Paul Pockros, MD
Dr. Pockros is one of the visionaries who is responsible for bringing the transplant program to Scripps. He is a very respected liver doctor and he remains quite active in his medical practice here and in many phases of clinical research. An engaging speaker, his support group presentations are informative and sometimes are reminiscent of a reunion because his presence attracts patients from past years.

Speaker: Adam Deising, DO
Local hepatologist Dr. Adam Deising practices at Balboa Naval Medical Center where he sees many veterans and their dependents. Initially trained in osteopathic medicine, he brings a different perspective to the specialty of liver medicine, looking at the whole being of a patient, rather than the more narrow focus of medical doctors. Well known to and well respected by Scripps liver doctors Frenette and Madani, Dr. Deising consults with them regularly. Meet him at our July support group and hear how an osteopath liver specialist views his specialty.

Dr. Carter is a Scripps nephrologist who treats a wide range of kidney issues, including acute and chronic diseases, and transplant-related concerns. This is a vital discussion for kidney patients.
