Dear residency candidate,
Thank you for your interest in the Scripps Mercy San Diego Internal Medicine Residency Program.
Scripps Mercy Hospital is the oldest hospital in San Diego County (125 years of service) and the largest hospital in San Diego County (licensed for 750 beds). We provide both primary care and tertiary care to our patients. Scripps Mercy San Diego has a new, very busy, fully-staffed and equipped ED.
We are a Level I Trauma Center, a certified STEMI Center, and a certified Stroke Center. Our hospital and its subspecialists are equipped and competent to perform advanced tertiary procedures. Our tertiary care ICU is one of the busiest and highest acuity ICU’s in the county. We also have a well-established pain and palliative care program.
Our patient population is medically diverse (primary and tertiary care) and socio-economically-racially diverse. San Diego is a port city and a border city which further increases the diversity of our patient and disease mix. Scripps Mercy and Scripps Health as a parent organization are very financially stable. Scripps Mercy has won numerous national awards for the quality of care that it provides (i.e., Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, 2014) and for the way it treats its employees, including residents (e.g., Top 50 Employers in the National Great Place to Work Survey, 2016).
Scripps Mercy San Diego has sponsored multiple residency training programs since 1947, which makes it the oldest, non-military residency training program in San Diego County. Our Internal Medicine Residency Program provides broad-based, clinical training for future Ambulatory Care Internists, Hospitalist Internists, classical Ambulatory/In-patient Internists, Academic Internists, and Subspecialists.
The Scripps Mercy Internal Medicine Residency Program was selected by the ACGME to be one of the original Educational Innovations Programs (one of 8 in the country). We have repetitively earned the maximum ABIM/ACGME 5 year accreditation approval. Our resident graduates have continued to achieve after graduation by securing quality jobs, prestigious fellowships in multiple subspecialties, academic positions at prestigious medical centers, and chief of staff positions at multiple regional hospitals.
One of many unique features about Scripps Mercy San Diego is that almost all of our residents will be certified in many classical Internal Medicine procedures by graduation. (Please refer to program highlights for more details). Another unique feature is that our residents are formally certified in bedside cardio-pulmonary vascular limited ultrasound examination by graduation. Scripps Mercy San Diego and its residents also help train MS-3 and MS-4 students from multiple medical schools on some in-patient and out-patient rotations, so our residents gain experience in teaching medicine as well as learning it.
Last but not least is “location, location, location.” San Diego is a great city in all respects. The year-around excellent weather and the many varied and affordable entertainment opportunities that San Diego provides help residents maximally enjoy their time off.
Please take this opportunity to further review our web site to learn why Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego is an excellent place to begin your career in “the Specialty of Internal Medicine.”
