Dear residency candidate,

Thank you for your interest in the Scripps Mercy San Diego Transitional Year and Transitional Year/Anesthesia Residency Program. Transitional Year residency training is an exciting and very important juncture in your medical career. I hope the information presented here will help in your decision process.

Scripps Mercy Hospital has been serving the community for 125 years, longer than any other hospital in San Diego. We are licensed for 750 beds and provide both primary and tertiary care to our patients. Our tertiary care ICU is one of the busiest and highest acuity ICU’s in the county. We recently opened a brand new Emergency Department, which serves as a Level I Trauma Center, a certified STEMI receiving center and a certified Stroke Center.

Residents come out of our program with a strong knowledge base in fundamental clinical skills that serve as a superior foundation for clinical training in their chosen specialty. They have secured competitive fellowships in their specialty and have risen to academic positions at prestigious medical centers.

During your training you will have the opportunity to care for a very diverse patient population. Our central location within San Diego and proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border allows us to provide care to a community with a broad range of healthcare needs. These are just a few of the factors that lead to a rewarding residency experience. In addition, Scripps Mercy has won numerous national awards for quality of care (e.g., America’s Best Hospitals by U.S. News and World Report) and employee’s satisfaction (e.g., Top 50 Employers in the National Great Place to Work Survey.)

Scripps Mercy San Diego has sponsored multiple residency training programs since 1947, which makes it the oldest, non-military residency training program in San Diego County. Our transitional year program is accredited by the ACGME, and we have repeatedly earned the maximum 5 year cycle review length from this accreditation agency.

We offer 12 Transitional Year positions. We also offer 6 Transitional Year/Anesthesia positions, which are offered in conjunction with University of California San Diego’s Anesthesia Program. We provide the Transitional Year training for these 6 individuals who have matched into the UCSD program for PGY-2.

In addition to these Transitional Year Residency Programs, we also offer ACGME accredited residencies in Internal Medicine and Family Medicine, as well as residencies in Podiatry and Pharmacy that are accredited by their respective national accreditation agencies.

Please take this opportunity to further review our website to learn why Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego is an excellent place to begin your training with one of our Transitional Year Residency Programs.
