Fellowship Program Learning Opportunities
Fellows in the UCSD/Scripps Health Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program have the opportunity to learn in a variety of settings, which provides them exposure to diverse patients with a wide range of acute and chronic issues, including adults in long-term care facilities and pediatric patients.
To acquire the education and training needed to effectively care for people with serious or life-threatening illnesses, rotations and curriculum provide trainees with opportunities to:
- Participate as members of the interdisciplinary care team
- Develop and manage patient care plans
- Facilitate continuity of care
Fellows participate in weekly educational conferences to build their foundation of HPM knowledge, as well as to grow their teaching and presentation skills with mentorship and feedback.
They also get a chance to provide consultative services with palliative care teams at University of California, San Diego and Scripps hospitals, and care for Scripps Hospice patients throughout San Diego County. Fellows consult on symptom control and help determine the patient and family goals of care by facilitating family meetings in inpatient, outpatient and long-term care settings.
