Biography

As a neuro-ophthalmologist, Leah Levi, MD, evaluates and treats patients with disorders of the nervous system that affect vision. This also includes the evaluation of patients with visual symptoms such as vision loss, double vision, and visual field defects that may signify neurological or systemic diseases.


She commonly sees patients for a variety of diseases and conditions, including the following:


  • Papilledema
  • Optic atrophy
  • Nystagmus and other abnormal eye movements
  • Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri)
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Thyroid eye disease
  • Brain tumors with visual symptoms
  • Strokes with visual symptoms
  • Neurological disease with visual symptoms
  • Lid abnormalities
  • Pupil abnormalities
  • Visual symptoms of unclear cause


Dr. Levi believes in actively listening to her patients and taking the time to understand and properly treat their issue with caring and compassion. She also believes in collaborating with her patients and the referring physician to provide education on the cause and management of the condition.


Dr. Levi is nationally known in her field and is the past president of both the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society and California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. Prior to joining Scripps Clinic, she was on faculty at the University of California, San Diego for 23 years, where she directed the neuro-ophthalmology service. She also taught medical students, ophthalmology residents and neurology residents, and was honored with 16 teaching awards. In addition, she has been named as a Top Doctor by San Diego Magazine and US News and World Report.


In her spare time she enjoys gardening, reading and making the occasional pine needle basket.
