Richard Keating, MD

Richard Keating, MD, is an experienced rheumatologist who cares for people with a broad range of autoimmune and rheumatic diseases. Particular clinical interests include rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus and inflammatory muscle disease.

He encourages a collaborative relationship between patient and physician and believes that the best physician is one who actively listens to the patient, forging an alliance to improve their health.

Dr. Keating graduated from the George Washington University School of Medicine and entered military service in the U.S. Navy. He trained in internal medicine at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and in rheumatology and clinical immunology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. During his naval service, Dr. Keating was active in patient care and medical education. He served as specialty advisor to the U.S. Navy Surgeon General for rheumatology and was chairman of the department of medicine at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego.

Following military service, he joined the faculty at the University of Chicago where he served as program director for the rheumatology fellowship and was a professor of medicine. He directed several clinical research programs, led a busy clinical service, and was recognized for his contributions to patient care and teaching.

Dr. Keating joined Scripps Clinic in 2013 as program director for the rheumatology fellowship. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology. He has held clinical faculty positions at UCSD and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

In his free time, Dr. Keating enjoys exercising, reading and travel.
