Helping families with infertility

Scripps affiliated fertility and reproductive medicine programs offer a combination of progressive treatment options to assist couples facing infertility challenges. After men’s or women’s fertility testing and screening procedures, our reproductive medicine specialists can pinpoint specific fertility problems. Physicians may consult with an interdisciplinary team to devise an effective infertility treatment plan to help improve the probability of conception.

Infertility treatment options

For couples having trouble conceiving, there are many infertility treatment options available including fertility medications, surgical options and IVF treatment using your partner’s or donor sperm. Your infertility treatment options will vary based on the unique cause of your infertility as determined by fertility tests.

Fertility medications

If your infertility is caused by a hormone imbalance, fertility drugs may be prescribed to help regulate hormone levels and stimulate ovulation. Some conditions where fertility medication might be prescribed include:

  • Absent or irregular menses
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): a condition caused by an imbalance of female hormones and an increased amount of androgens (male hormones)
  • Hyperprolactinemia: a high level of the hormone prolactin in the body, which is responsible for the stimulation of breast milk but can also cause infertility

Fertility medications vary based on your unique infertility problems. Fertility drugs are either taken as a pill or as injections. Fertility medication can also be used in conjunction with other infertility treatments including intrauterine insemination (IUI) with your partner’s or donor sperm. IUI, or artificial insemination, is a procedure where your partner’s or donor sperm are injected directly into the uterus to improve the odds of conception.
