Campus Expansion

Designed for the community

The new Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla will be the most comprehensive medical campus in the region and will provide greater collaboration and efficiency between its two La Jolla campuses at Scripps Memorial and Scripps Green Hospital.

Patients will have all of their health care needs met in one location, from wellness, prevention and advanced diagnostics in the medical offices and outpatient pavilion to the latest medical and surgical treatments in the new hospital.

A new era of medicine

The first tower – a seven-story, 383,000-square-foot hospital tower – will cost $456 million and will open for patient care in spring 2015. The first tower will be the hub of the and will feature:

  • 108 in-patient beds in private rooms
  • 60 intensive care beds
  • Four state-of-art operating rooms
  • Two hybrid operating rooms
  • Four cardiac catheterization labs with the most advanced medical technology
  • Centralized cardiovascular research labs
  • A center for graduate medical education

Campus expansion continues

Following the completion of the first tower, construction will continue with:

  • Two additional hospital towers
  • Two new medical office buildings
  • Research and graduate education facilities
  • An outpatient care pavilion
  • Additional parking
  • New on-campus entry and roadway realignment to allow for maximum use of the 43-acre site

Under this campus expansion plan, the existing hospital will be razed and a new hospital will be built to meet state seismic standards while providing services necessary to meet current and future health care needs of the community.

Numerous green building principles and practices were incorporated into the plan. These include large expanses of windows to take advantage of natural light, water- and energy-saving devices will be incorporated wherever possible, and a “green” roof on at least one of the hospital towers.

Built for healing

At Scripps, we know the experts in healing are our clinicians and caregivers. That’s why we used the input from more than 200 of our physicians, nurses and clinical staff to design our new facilities. With spacious rooms, advanced technology and plenty of natural light, the redesigned Scripps La Jolla will offer a safe, comforting environment for our patients and efficiencies for caregivers.

Design enhancements will also allow caregivers to closely monitor patients and improve communications with family members. These include:

  • Computerized room-level observation stations
  • A decentralized medication dispensing process
  • Wireless technology
  • Decentralized nurses stations

In addition, patient rooms provide a variety of amenities for families, including wireless Internet access, flat screen televisions and comfortable pullout couches and sleeper chairs for overnight stays.
