Established in 1890 by the Sisters of Mercy, Scripps Mercy Hospital is San Diego’s oldest and only Catholic medical center and the largest teaching hospital in the region — with campuses in San Diego and Chula Vista.

Our commitment to quality patient care is based on the ethical and cultural precepts of the Catholic tradition, which inspire the role of spirituality in the healing process and the humanistic treatment we give to our patients and staff.

As San Diego’s premier metropolitan medical center and teaching facility, Scripps Mercy is committed to providing safe and high quality care from a multidisciplinary patient care team approach — from physicians, nurses and clinical support staff to chaplains and volunteers. With 700 acute-care licensed beds, more than 3,000 employees and 1,300 physicians, we provide comprehensive care, from routine check-ups and primary care to a wide range of specialty services.

Mercy style of care

To us, exceptional patient service is known as the “Mercy Style of Care.” Patients and their loved ones talk about a distinctive feeling at Scripps Mercy, something that distinguishes our hospital from other health care facilities. We believe that the mind, body and spirit each play an integral part in the healing process, and we care for our patients with that philosophy in mind.
