Public Notice

March 14, 2024 — Scripps Health is moving forward with a proposal to consolidate obstetric services on the Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista campus (located at 435 H Street) onto the Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego campus. Both hospital campuses accept Medi-Cal and Medicare patients. Tom Gammiere serves as regional chief executive over the hospital.

Inpatient beds at Scripps Mercy Chula Vista are currently occupied at or beyond full licensed capacity, due to the continued high community demand for emergency, medical-surgical and cardiac services, while, on average, only about half of the beds in the OB unit are in use. The current obstetrics space now houses 30 licensed perinatal beds and a 10-bed NICU, operated by Rady Children’s Hospital. Consolidating OB services at Scripps Mercy San Diego and repurposing these spaces at Scripps Mercy Chula Vista, will add up to an additional 28 medical-surgical-telemetry and observation beds. This will provide much-needed capacity for the continued high volume of patients requiring these services at Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista.

Scripps began a 90-day public notification on March 14. Approximately 135 positions in OB services are affected. Scripps is working to transition as many of these employees as possible to other positions.

Planned deliveries will continue at Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista through mid-June. Patients expecting to deliver after mid-June have several options available to them. The three nearest hospitals to Scripps Mercy Chula Vista include Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest. For more information, patients should contact their physician, or may call 1-800-SCRIPPS.
