In Scripps Health’s latest “Savvy Patient” article in the UT San Diego, Frank Coufal, MD, explains a promising new alternative for relieving neck and back pain when initial treatments are insufficient. Artificial disc surgery involves replacing a degenerated disc with a mechanical device to restore normal motion. It has been approved by the FDA for use in both the lower back and neck.
