A history of quality, excellence and innovation

Scripps Clinic has been caring for San Diegans for more than 90 years, but it is much more than a medical group. We have been advancing medicine and training new physicians for decades. We conduct breakthrough research to bring promising new therapies and effective treatments to our patients here and from around the country. That is why patients travel from across the country and abroad to see Scripps Clinic physicians.

Scripps Clinic began in 1924 with the Scripps Metabolic Clinic established by philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps to advance the care of diabetes patients.

Today, clinical trials are being conducted at Scripps Clinic across medical specialties, from neurology to cancer and heart disease to orthopedics.

Convenience and access

Scripps Clinic’s more than 600 doctors provide care at several locations across the region, as well as urgent care centers open 7 days a week in Rancho Bernardo and La Jolla. The Scripps Clinic Urgent Care Center in La Jolla is open 24 hours, 7 days week.

Many Scripps Clinic locations include outpatient surgery centers, lab services, imaging services, and other specialty support to provide the exceptional Scripps Clinic model of care. Three Scripps Clinic locations offer infusion services as part of integrated cancer care.

Scripps Clinic specialists can see their patients in more than one Scripps Clinic location, providing you even greater convenience and easier access. As an integrated medical group, Scripps Clinic specialty physicians and surgeons at any of our locations have access to your secure electronic health records to ensure continuity of care and enhanced medical accuracy.

Nationally ranked medical specialties

Scripps Clinic doctors and surgeons are part of teams recognized as among the America’s best in care for heart, orthopedics, gynecology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, diabetes and endocrinology, ear, nose and throat, and geriatrics. Access to this integrated care provided by some of the country’s top specialists is available to you as a Scripps Clinic patient, regardless of where you receive your Scripps Clinic primary care.

The work of Scripps Clinic cardiologists and surgeons contributes to the #1 ranking for Scripps Health for heart care in San Diego by U.S. News & World Report. The same doctors are internationally known for their pioneering work in cardiovascular treatments, including non-invasive procedures such as TAVR and other catheter-based approaches to solving dangerous heart conditions.

Heart specialists at Scripps Clinic have also played a leading role in many cardiology “firsts” for San Diego to treat heart disease, including:

  • The co-invention of one of the world’s first stents
  • Implantation of the first miniature heart monitor in the U.S.
  • The first use locally of cryoablation to cure abnormal heart rhythms

The opening in 2015 of the $456 million Prebys Cardiovascular Institute provides the catalyst for more heart care “firsts” by Scripps Clinic cardiologists. In 2016, Scripps Clinic physicians are scheduled to begin moving into the new state-of-the-art Anderson Medical Pavilion next to the Prebys facility, ushering in the next chapter in our history of caring for San Diego.

Official health care provider for the San Diego Padres

Scripps Clinic doctors serve as official health care provider to the San Diego Padres, and U.S. News & World Report has ranked Scripps Health #1 for orthopedics in San Diego. This top rating is based on quality, patient outcomes, technology, treatment offerings and our patient care facilities, including the Donald P. and Darlene V. Shiley Musculoskeletal Center at Scripps Clinic on Torrey Pines in La Jolla. The center is known as one of nation’s top destinations for orthopedic care. Scripps Clinic physician scientists and orthopedists are also driving some of the world’s most advanced clinical studies to develop new ways that help patients get back in the game.

Many Scripps Clinic physicians perform surgeries at Scripps Green Hospital, and most of their patients who require acute care are admitted to the award-winning hospital. Recognized as one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation by international business research firm Truven Health Analytics, Scripps Green is also one of two Scripps hospitals to earn “High Performing” (top rating) from U.S. News & World Report for these five adult conditions and procedures:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Scripps hospitals are the only in San Diego to earn the highest possible rating from U.S. News & World Report in all five categories.
