Nociscan MR Spectroscopy scan in patients for Degenerative Low Back Pain

Inclusion Criteria
Patients must:
- Be 18 to 70 years of age.
Be planning to undergo surgical treatment of degenerative lumbar disc (discogenic) back pain.
Have a diagnosis of damaged or disease lumbar disc (discogenic) back pain that requires treatment in the lumbar spine caused by degenerative disc disease (identified via MRI).
Have failed at least 6 months of non-operative treatment (for example: physical therapy, bed rest, chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage therapy) OR requires urgent surgical treatment.
Exclusion Criteria
Patients must not:
- Have a primary diagnosis of a spinal condition other than degenerative disc disease.
Have had prior lumbar back surgery or intradiscal treatments.
Have severe spinal canal stenosis.
Be pregnant or breast feeding when scans are performed.
Have a BMI greater than 40.
Be currently receiving worker's compensation, involved in any litigation for personal injury, medical negligence, trauma or worker's compensation.
Additional Info
Patients will be randomized (like the flip of a coin) to 1 of 2 groups: Unblinded and Blinded NOCISCAN reports.Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) Scan will take place at Scripps Green Hospital Torrey Pines.
Study participation will consist of 4 follow-up visits after Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) scan. Total study duration is expected to be up to 24 months.
