Scripps Honored As Top San Diego Employer

Scripps Health Earns Top Honors in 2008 Workplace Excellence Awards

San Diego – Scripps Health has earned top honors for workplace excellence in San Diego County, receiving a Marble Award in the largest employer category of the 2008 Workplace Excellence Awards, presented by the San Diego Society for Human Resource Management.

The Workplace Excellence Awards recognize exceptional human resources practices that translate into employee satisfaction and successful organizational performance. More than 130 organizations in four categories were nominated for this year’s competition.

Scripps Health was honored largely for the success of its Great Place to Work (GPTW) approach to employee relations, which aims to recruit and retain top talent and engage employees to improve their satisfaction and job performance. This year, 86 percent of Scripps employees reported that Scripps is a great place to work — up from 58 percent in 2002, when the GPTW strategy was implemented.

Additionally, Scripps has one of the lowest employee turnover rates among health care organizations in California and invests heavily in the professional development of its workforce. Low employee turnover and high staff achievement have combined to improve Scripps’ organizational productivity, leading to an operating margin of $100 million in 2007 — an operational turnaround of $115 million in a six-year span. During the same period, Scripps has received a growing number of accolades for its clinical excellence.

Fueled in part by a satisfied, high-performing workforce, Scripps is now embarking on a 10-year, $2.2 billion upgrade to its facilities and technology to keep pace with the growing need for health care services in San Diego County.

“Maintaining a strong workforce is critical to Scripps because it enables us to provide superior clinical care to our patients,” said Vic Buzachero, corporate senior vice president of human resources for Scripps Health. “We listen closely to what our employees tell us they want, and then we design benefits and programs that meet their needs for their entire life cycle.”

The 2008 Workplace Excellence Award is just the latest in a series of awards honoring Scripps as a top employer. Earlier this year, Scripps was named to:
