Scripps Health has been named one of the top 10 nonprofit companies for executive women by the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE). The list recognizes organizations whose policies and practices encourage women’s advancement and whose numbers at the highest levels of leadership demonstrate that commitment.

“We are honored to be recognized among the nation’s top 10 nonprofit companies for executive women,” said Chris Van Gorder, president and CEO of Scripps. “Scripps prides itself on being a great place to work and we know that our success lies in creating an environment that offers unlimited opportunities for growth and career satisfaction.”

Helping women advance

Scripps was recognized for its innovative policies and practices to help women advance in the workplace.

“Women have great opportunity for advancement at Scripps through mentoring for senior and executive positions and as part of succession planning,” said June Komar, who has held multiple leadership positions over the years at Scripps before becoming the corporate executive vice president of strategy and administration. “As a destination employer, Scripps makes career development a priority. The majority of promotions to senior and executive positions are from within.”

Of Scripps’ 13,500 employees, 77 percent are women, and women make up 68 percent of the management group. Scripps has 61 executives accountable for the success of all aspects of the organization – 24 of these leaders are women (39 percent).

Recognizing opportunities for advancement

“Women are achieving success in moving into top positions at many of the nation’s nonprofits at a greater pace than in private sector companies,” said Betty Spence, PhD, president of NAFE. “The ‘NAFE Top 10 Nonprofits’ offer environments where women’s work life needs are respected and where they get the opportunities to advance. For women, these are the top companies to work for.”
