Working Mother Names Scripps Health a Top 100 Company

Working Mother magazine has named Scripps Health one of the 100 Best Companies for working moms for the 13th consecutive year based on Scripps’ strong record of leadership in family benefits and paid leave. Scripps is the only San Diego-based organization on the 2017 Working Mother 100 Best Companies list.

"We’re honored to once again be recognized as one of the most family-friendly employers in the nation by Working Mother,” said Chris Van Gorder, president and CEO of Scripps Health. “We value our employees and are committed to helping them balance meaningful careers with their home lives," he said.

Companies on the list scored high for their commitment to family-oriented programs such as child care, paid time off and leave, flexible work arrangements and support for advancement programs for women. Women make up 76 percent of the Scripps workforce.

Scripps Working Mother to be honored

For the eighth year, Working Mother is recognizing one special Working Mother of the Year from each company named to the 100 Best Companies list. Catherine Abalos, a registered nurse and manager of clinical informatics at Scripps Health, is the 2017 Working Mother of the Year at Scripps. Abalos, a former patient care manager in the medical surgical unit at Scripps Green Hospital, was the site clinical readiness lead for Scripps Green when it transitioned to a new electronic medical record system earlier this year and was praised for her strong organizational and leadership abilities and compassionate approach when it comes to work life balance for all employees.

Abalos was also recognized for being an outstanding mentor who encourages employees to achieve their goals and advance their careers, including by advising certified nursing assistants to enter registered nursing programs. She consistently receives strong employee engagement and patient satisfaction scores.

Abalos will be honored along with the other recipients on at Working Mother’s awards banquet on Oct. 24 in New York. She will be joined by Cara Williams, assistant vice president for human resources at Scripps Health, who will be a featured speaker at Working Mother’s national conference presenting on best practices and employee engagement. 

Scripps garners other national accolades 

In addition to making Working Mother’s 100 Best Companies list, Scripps was recently named to Fortune Magazine’s 100 Best Workplaces for Women. Earlier this year, Scripps was ranked in the magazine’s annual 100 Best Companies to Work For list for the 10th consecutive year. Scripps also was recently named one of the 60 best organizations for learning and development programs by ELearning! Media Group.
