Which insurance plans are accepted at Scripps?
Scripps accepts most health insurance plans. Physicians and facilities are conveniently located throughout San Diego County — including primary care physicians, pediatricians and experts in more than 100 medical and surgical specialties.
If you have a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan, you’ll need to choose a primary care physician (PCP) as your first step. Then, if you want to see a specialist — like a dermatologist or neurologist — your PCP can refer you to that specialist as needed.
If you have a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan, you may have more flexibility when choosing a doctor or hospital. Check with your plan before making an appointment.

What is the difference between a MD, DO, PA and NP?
When choosing a provider to schedule an appointment with, you may notice that some providers have a MD, DO, NP or PA behind their name.
- MD: Doctor of Allopathic Medicine, commonly known as Medical Doctor, is a fully trained physician in a specialty like Family Medicine or Cardiology.
- DO: Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine is a fully trained physician, certified in primary care or specialty care. DOs often take a more holistic approach to care.
- PA: Physician assistants are licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. PAs can perform physical exams, provide advice on preventive health care and more.
- NP: A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse with enhanced training and education.
