Module 3: How Supplemented Nutrients Differ from Food Derived Nutrients

Overview

This module will explore the basic differences between the vitamins and minerals found in supplement ingredients and compare them to food-derived ingredients. This module will also review natural vs. “synthetic”, bio-identical vs. bio-equivalent as well as discuss where food-derived sources are insufficient for some therapeutic dosing.


Educational Objectives

After completing this enduring material, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the delivery forms of nutrients (powders, tablets capsules) and their excipients.
  • Define “natural” and “synthetic” nutrients and when these differences are relevant.
  • Discuss detailed examples for natural/synthetic nutrients including Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Folates, Vitamin D, Calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Examine challenges presented by “wholefood” supplements.
