New Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo Opens

Scripps Clinic’s new replacement facility in Rancho Bernardo opened its doors to the public on September 15, 2008—putting more high quality care within reach for residents of North County’s growing communities.

Located directly across the street from the former Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo on Innovation Drive, the new facility is double the size and designed to enhance the patient experience. More than 250 employees representing 30 medical and surgical specialties are providing services at the new facility, offering an unprecedented level of care to consumers in the area. Features include:

  • Expanded urgent care, offering services from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., 7 days a week
  • More primary care clinicians, making more appointments available
  • A fully digital imaging center, reducing wait times for test results
  • An on-site ambulatory surgery center, eliminating hospital visits for some services
  • A multi-level parking structure, providing room for more than 600 vehicles

”We’ve always had a high standard of care,” said Melody Stewart, senior administrative director at Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo. “Now we’ve got more advanced diagnostic and treatment tools and more space to provide our services. These improvements make it easier for us to provide comprehensive, high quality care for our patients.”

Opening doors, meeting needs

“Scripps provides an extraordinary level of care,” San Diego City Councilman Brain Maienschein said at the private ribbon cutting ceremony for the new clinic on September 4, 2008. He represents District 5, which encompasses the cities Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo primarily serves. “We are so fortunate and grateful to have this new facility here caring for the health needs of our community. It exemplifies Scripps’ commitment to being a community partner.”

That partnership began decades ago. Located near the intersection of Interstate 15 and Highway 56, Scripps Clinic became the first multi-specialty health care provider in Rancho Bernardo in 1981. Since that time, the area’s landscape has changed—and so have the community’s needs.

North County has experienced exponential growth in the past two decades. Once lined with trees and dotted with a few subdivisions, the golden rolling hills surrounding the clinic are now covered with homes and businesses. The population surge brought with it a need for more health care. The new clinic will be providing a good portion of it, accommodating an estimated 250,000 patient visits a year.

“This facility is a crucial part of the health of our community,” said Michael Robinson, president and CEO of San Diego North Chamber of Commerce. “It defines the connection between business and quality of life, and allows our employers to make a greater investment in their employees.”

Construction crews broke ground on the replacement clinic in October of 2006. It was completed two months ahead of schedule and under budget.

“No matter how successful we’ve been over the years, we’ve challenged ourselves to continually improve upon our services so we can provide our patients with better care than they could find anywhere else,” said Scripps Clinic Chief Executive Larry Harrison. “Our new Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo truly fulfills that mission.”
