Scripps Becomes First in U.S. to Offer Genetic Tests for Stent Patients

Scripps Health is breaking new ground by offering genetic testing to stent patients to screen for gene variants that affects their ability to respond to the blood thinner Plavix. The testing will give doctors vastly improved data that will lead to an individualized approach to each patient’s treatment. Initially, the tests are being offered to elective stent patients at Scripps Green Hospital, but may eventually be expanded to patients at other Scripps facilities. The San Diego Union-Tribune profiled this landmark program on the front page of its Oct. 30, 2009 edition.
