Scripps Green Hospital ranks among the 10 best hospitals in the United States when it comes to surgical safety, according to a first-ever ranking by Consumer Reports magazine.
Scripps Green was the only hospital in San Diego County to make the top 10 list and one of only two from California. The recognition came four months after the La Jolla hospital was named one of the nation’s 100 best by Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of health care.
The Consumer Reports rankings were based on billing claims data from Medicare patients who underwent 27 kinds of surgeries at 2,463 hospitals from 2009 through 2011, according to the magazine. The analysis reviewed the percentage of surgery patients who died in the hospital or stayed longer than expected.
