Scripps Health Chief Academic Officer Eric Topol, MD, continues to play a leading role in some of the most important U.S. discussions about medicine and the future of health care, according to a pair of recent assessments of the nation’s most influential doctors.

For the third year in a row, the cardiologist and geneticist has landed on Modern Healthcare magazine’s annual list of the 50 Most Influential Physician Executives, coming in at No. 37.

The listing recognizes doctors working in the health care industry who were selected by their peers and an expert panel for their leadership and role in shaping the evolving health care landscape.

A separate list recognized Dr. Topol’s influence on Twitter, the online social network that has become an important platform for sharing news, information and ideas about medicine and health care innovation.

Dr. Topol was the seventh most followed physician on Twitter by the 220,000 U.S. doctors whose digital footprints are tracked by the industry intelligence firm WCG through its MDigitalLife database.

Dr. Topol, who tweets from @EricTopol, has amassed nearly 40,000 followers on the social network.

As director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute in La Jolla, his scientific work focuses on innovative research in genomics, wireless technology and bioinformatics aimed at individualizing medicine and transforming health care.
