Medical group achieves high rating for second year in a row

Scripps Clinic Medical Group has been recognized for providing high-quality care to Medicare Advantage patients by the Integrated Healthcare Association (IHA) for the second consecutive year. The statewide nonprofit highlights high-value, integrated care that improves quality and affordability for patients.

IHA used 12 clinical quality measures to collect performance data and assigned star ratings to 181 physician organizations based on how well they provided recommended care in 2016 to more than 2 million California seniors and people with disabilities enrolled in Medicare Advantage health maintenance organizations (HMOs). Each year, IHA recognizes physician organizations that achieve a 4.5- or 5-star rating.

Scripps Clinic Medical Group attained a 4.5-star rating for 2017-18 based on care provided to Medicare Advantage patients in 2016.

“We are extremely pleased with this recognition,” said Dan Dworsky, MD, vice president of quality and value for Scripps Clinic Medical Group. “Our physicians and staff are dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to those who have entrusted their health to us and this is a reflection of their exceptional work.”

IHA President and CEO Jeffrey Rideout, M.D., praised medical groups like Scripps Clinic Medical Group for making health care more transparent through their participation in the Medicare Advantage star quality ratings.

“We applaud their hard work and commitment to improving the quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries,” Dr. Rideout said.

Clinical quality measures used to calculate the star ratings range from rates of breast and colorectal cancer screenings to eye exams and blood sugar control for patients with diabetes to managing osteoporosis in women with a previous fracture. Collecting these measures at the physician organization level allows IHA to combine data from six participating health plans to identify performance variations that can help plans and physician organizations target quality improvement efforts.
