Kristy Castillo wore high-tech insulin pump during 26.2 mile race

San Diego Magazine recently profiled Kristy Castillo, a Scripps diabetes patient who completed her first marathon last year with the help of a high-tech insulin pump system.


Castillo finished the 26.2 mile Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego while wearing a hybrid closed-loop insulin pump to control her blood sugar level throughout the race. Athena Philis-Tsimikas, MD, an endocrinologist and corporate vice president of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute, said new technologies are helping to improve the quality of life for people with diabetes.
