Ultra-Rare Pregnancy Leads to Extra-Special Mother’s Day
Unique triplets pregnancy occurs in one out of 100,000 births

The arrival of triplets (from left) Hazel, Sutton and Everett will make this Mother’s Day extra-special for parents Mikayla Toney and Blake Hertz.

With Mother’s Day approaching, CBS 8 TV covered the inspiring story of Mikayla Toney, who recently gave birth to triplets after an exceedingly rare, high-risk pregnancy. Mikayla experienced a spontaneous monochorionic triamniotic pregnancy. It’s a naturally conceived pregnancy where three babies share a single placenta, a situation that occurs in one out of 100,000 births.
Under the care of Scripps Clinic maternal-fetal medicine director Sean Daneshmand, MD, the triplets are now healthy after spending time in the Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla neonatal intensive care unit. Scripps operates all of its NICUs in partnership with Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego.
